In one lunar region, Japan’s “Moon Sniper” mission has beaten the odds and survived three long, frigid lunar nights since its sideways landing on January 19. The Tianwen-2 mission will visit the space rock later this decade. But first, China has set its sights on returning to the moon’s “hidden side.”An illustration depicts the far side of the moon, with Earth behind it. Since the Chang’e 4 mission in 2019, China remains the only country to have landed on the moon’s far side, sometimes called the “dark side” of the moon. Scientists hope that returning samples from the far side could solve some of the biggest remaining lunar mysteries, including the moon’s true origin.

“The far side of the moon is very different from the near side,” said Li Chunlai, China National Space Administration deputy chief designer. The Yutu-2 lunar rover took an image of the Chang'e-4 lunar probe on the far side of the moon on January 11, 2019. Far side mysteriesDespite years of orbital data and samples collected during six of the Apollo missions, scientists are still trying to answer key questions about the moon. Why the far side of the moon? But the far side of the moon — it is not actually the dark side of the moon — is distinct from the near side. With a lunar far side sample, scientists can begin to probe why the two sides of the moon are so different. Because the same side of the moon always faces Earth, it is impossible to directly establish communications with the lunar far side. Chang’e-7, expected to launch in 2026, will search for water at the lunar south pole.

China launched the Chang'e-6 probe to collect samples from the far side of the moon. AdvertisementChina on Friday launched a probe to collect samples from the far side of the moon, as it stepped up its space race against the US. The Chang'e-6 probe successfully lifted off from China's Wenchang Space Launch Center at 5.37 a.m. It will collect around two kilograms of lunar samples from the far side of the moon for analysis. "People want to know why this happened," Yi Xu, a professor at the Space Science Institute of Macau University of Science and Technology and a member of the Chang'e-6 science team told The New York Times.

China’s planned 53-day mission would see the Chang’e-6 lander touch down in a gaping crater on the moon’s far side, which never faces Earth. China became the first and only country to land on the moon’s far side during its 2019 Chang’e-4 mission. Ambitious missionThe Chang’e-6 probe will be a key test for China’s space capabilities in its effort to realize leader Xi Jinping’s “eternal dream” of building the country into a space power. This time, to communicate with Earth from the moon’s far side, Chang’e-6 must rely on the Queqiao-2 satellite, launched into lunar orbit in March. This time, China has said the Chang’e-6 mission will carry scientific instruments or payloads from France, Italy, Pakistan and the European Space Agency.

(AP) — The U.S., Canada and several indigenous groups announced a proposal on Monday to address the pollution from coal mining in British Columbia that's been contaminating waterways and harming fisheries on both sides of the border for years. The proposal would be executed through a century-old U.S.-Canada boundary waters treaty, establishing independent boards to study the pollution’s extent and make cleanup recommendations. It comes after indigenous groups in British Columbia, Montana and Idaho lobbied for more than a decade for the federal governments in the U.S. and Canada to intervene and stop the flow of pollution. The proposal calls for no more than two years of study to gauge the extent of pollution. Investigators in Canada found Teck Resources Limited discharged hazardous amounts of selenium and calcite from two coal mines north of Eureka, Montana.

The spacecraft would also make room for 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of foreign science payloads, the agency said on its website. This could allow overseas partners to conduct lunar research by “piggybacking” off the mission, Chinese state media said. China is not alone in elevating its space program and lunar ambitions as multiple countries eye the potential scientific benefit, national prestige and access to resources and further deep space exploration that successful moon missions could bring. That same week, Russia’s first lunar mission in decades ended in failure with its Luna 25 spacecraft crashing into the moon’s surface. Its last mission, Chang’e-5, landed on the moon in December 2020 and returned with samples of lunar rocks and soil.

THE WOLVES OF ETERNITY, by Karl Ove Knausgaard. As the late Milan Kundera put it: “A novel does not assert anything; a novel searches and poses questions.” But in our manic and precarious times, fiction that conveys no sense of a world in upheaval can feel partial. With “The Wolves of Eternity,” the Norwegian distance runner Karl Ove Knausgaard brings us his second massive speculative novel in three years. Like its predecessor, “The Morning Star” (2020), the new novel comprises multiple narratives filtered through various characters. The first half of the novel, a section titled “Syvert,” is the anchor narrative.

But passengers in Asia Pacific are currently grappling with bigger price jumps than other regions, highlighting the uneven global recovery. Economy fares to Asia from North America and Europe are set to rise 9.5% and 9.8% this year from last year, respectively, Amex GBT forecasts show. “In the markets where restrictions have been the last to lift, and hence [flight] capacity last to be restarted, the difference in fares is the highest,” said Aitken. Despite China’s reopening, outbound flight capacity “is currently only at 15% to 20% of pre-Covid levels,” according to Trip.com (TCOM) CEO Jane Sun. The restrictions have remained, and those most heavily impacted are between Asia and North America or Europe.
The recent falls in the stock of European financial stocks have presented a buying opportunity, according to RBC Capital Markets. However, RBC analysts say insurers are fundamentally different from banks, and the circumstances that led to SVB's collapse could not occur at an insurance company. Shares of Just Group in particular are expected to double over the next 12 months to £1.60 ($1.96) from its current share price of £0.79, according to RBC. "While bank customers can choose to withdraw their deposits there is no ability for an annuitant to withdraw." While the insurance firms only hold high-quality investments, as required by law, RBC analysts concede that there is a small risk if the underlying assets fail or if people live longer than anticipated.

TAIPEI, Nov 11 (Reuters) - Taiwanese electric scooter maker Gogoro Inc (GGR.O) is delaying its expansion plans in China due to geopolitical and economic uncertainty there and putting more focus on India and Indonesia, its chief financial officer told Reuters on Friday. As well as making its own vehicles, Gogoro has electric battery and other partnerships with vehicle makers including India's Hero MotoCorp (HROM.NS) and China's Dachangjiang Group and Yadea Group Holdings (1585.HK). Gogoro, known for its green-hued battery swap distribution network for riders, has ambitious plans, seeing potential to replace vast fleets of heavily-polluting, gasoline-powered scooters with electric two-wheelers as Asia's metropolises bid to improve air quality. With China being a challenging place, Gogoro is looking at its plans elsewhere, Aitken said. In Taiwan, Gogoro has a partnership with Foxconn (2317.TW), best known for assembling Apple Inc (AAPL.O) iPhones but with its own huge electric vehicle ambitions.

Eight experts told Insider they have doubts about Elon Musk's promises for Tesla's Optimus bot. Several experts said Tesla's AI Day demonstration doesn't stand out from other companies' projects. This year, at Tesla's second annual AI Day a prototype of the Optimus bot walked slowly onto the stage and waved to the audience. The Optimus bot did stand out in one way, according to several experts — its hands. Animesh Garg, a professor of AI Robotics at the University of Toronto, called the bot's hands "impressive."
